Members of the Association of Women Treated with Breast Cancer "Salonitanka" Solin once again marked Daffodil Day on the first Saturday of spring, a public health campaign that aims to raise social awareness about the importance of preventive examinations for the early detection of breast cancer. The celebration of this day was initiated in 1997 by the Croatian League Against Cancer in cooperation with the Croatian Forum Europa Donna, and the daffodil flower was chosen as a symbol of spring, hope and support, as well as new life and unity with those affected.
On this occasion, the "Salonitans" distributed commemorative leaflets and daffodils at several points in the city, in front of the Croatian Post Office and in shopping malls, and for the first time, they were joined by students from the Faculty of Medicine in Split, members of the student association "Together against Cancer".
This year, we have decided to distribute daffodils for free because our primary goal is to educate and raise awareness among women, but also men, who are increasingly suffering from breast cancer - said Jasna Leleković, president of "Salonitanki", thanking the students for their engagement and Mayor Dalibor Ninčević, who has traditionally supported this commendable campaign.
I once again joined our dear Salonitans in celebrating this day that reminds us of the importance of self-examination and medical check-ups, which play a major role in maintaining health - said the mayor, adding that early detection of the disease is extremely important for the course of treatment.
Take care of your health and make self-examination a top priority - Ninčević urged.
Jasna Leleković also warned about the importance of preventive examinations, emphasizing that the association performs around 400 free breast ultrasound examinations annually, and that mammography examinations are also carried out in parallel in cooperation with the Split Clinical Hospital.
I would like to emphasize that we are exclusively a humanitarian organization that works for the benefit of its fellow citizens - said Leleković, noting that with almost 3,000 new cases each year, breast cancer is still one of the most common malignant diseases among women in Croatia.
