A young man (21) from Lećevica was sentenced to a suspended sentence of 28 days in prison for hitting his mother twice in the back of the head with an open palm on December 22, 2025, at around 17:30 p.m. He became angry because his mother spent more money on groceries than they had agreed to.
The incident occurred in the family home where the young man lives with his mother. As he told the court, after he hit his mother, she called her brother and told him what had happened. The uncle announced that he would call the police. The young man then went to a cafe in Kaštel Gomilica, and later came to the police station himself, where he was detained until brought to court.
Before the judge, the young man confirmed that he had hit his mother, but did not consider himself responsible for the offense. He showed no remorse for his actions, which the court did not consider as a mitigating circumstance. He explained that his father had died three years ago and that he suffers from epilepsy. The family is under the supervision of the competent social welfare center.
The court rejected the police's proposal to impose a protective measure of mandatory psychosocial treatment on the young man, assessing that such a measure "cannot serve a purpose and is not indicated." However, the judge emphasized in the ruling that the social welfare center should conduct an assessment of the mother's vulnerability and determine whether their continued cohabitation is sustainable or whether the young man should be placed in an appropriate institution.
The defendant is not listed in the misdemeanor records, but another proceeding is underway against him for a misdemeanor under the Protection from Domestic Violence Act.
