The Croatian Health Insurance Institute (HZZO) has warned that an attempt at smishing fraud has recently appeared by sending fake SMS messages inviting citizens to update their health card, therefore they are advising citizens not to open such messages but to delete them.
As explained in a statement on Thursday, some citizens received fake SMS messages with the following content: "HZZO: Dear, your health card requires updating. In order to ensure the preservation of your rights, please fill out the necessary forms as soon as possible. https://hzzoo-eu.ekelk.com"
We warn all recipients of the aforementioned message that it is a fake message and that they should not open it or use the links within the message, the Croatian Health Insurance Institute (HZZO) said.
Smishing (SMS phishing) is a type of phishing attack carried out using SMS, usually involving a threat or invitation to click on a link or call a number and reveal sensitive information. Sometimes they suggest installing some security software, which is actually malware.
In case of an incident and damage to the recipients of the message, HZZO instructs citizens to report the incident to the MUP and the national CERT https://www.cert.hr/onama/kontakt/.
