Trogir city councilor Franko Maravić (HDS) released a series of videos titled "Rivers of Justice Are Coming", showing sewage being dumped into the sea in Foša, right next to the city market. The videos were taken on July 27, August 1, and again on August 19, and have sparked heated public reactions.
Maravić: "The river of shit is still flowing into our Foša"
With his first announcements, Maravić wanted, as he says, "to mobilize the public and put pressure on the ruling party of the city of Trogir to solve this, from a professional point of view, fairly simple hydrotechnical problem, whose consequences in terms of ecology and tourism are catastrophic."
He proposed the construction of a smaller pumping station on the bank of the market, into which the existing outlets would be connected, and the wastewater would be pumped into the fecal collector next to the market itself.
- It is unclear why we have this problem in our Foša? Is it due to the negligence of the ruling nomenclature? Or perhaps due to their ignorance and incompetence? Is it perhaps the sum of all of the above? In conclusion, the fact is that a river of shit is still flowing into our Foša! - said Maravić.
Bilić: "The problem was solved within one day"
Trogir Mayor Ante Bilić reacted to his footage, emphasizing that this was an emergency situation, not a permanent release.
- The footage, which dates back to August 1st and shows a sewage spill in Foš, is not about an illegal discharge from one or more houses, but rather a blockage of the main pipe in Stepinčeva Street and the overflow of the entire basin. We immediately reported it to ViK and the problem was resolved within a day, so I would like to commend ViK for its quick reaction - said Bilić.
He added that it would have been more efficient if the councilor had immediately reported the problem to the Water and Sewerage Department, "rather than using the situation for his own political promotion."
- No, there is no need to build a pumping station for a house that does not have a sewage connection. The problem has been fixed, it is certainly unpleasant to see, especially in the middle of the season, but accusing the city administration of this is pointless and sensationalistic - said the mayor.
On August 19, Maravić released a new video from Foša, claiming that the problem had not been resolved.
- Astonished by the mayor's reaction, which is seething with trivialization and untruth, I must expose you to another video that I recorded yesterday evening in our Foša after reading the aforementioned reaction, and which in itself denies all of Mayor Bilić's insinuations - stated Maravić.
The councilor claims that the problem is long-standing and systematic: There are up to a dozen sewage drains that go directly into the sea, and this video shows one of them in the most disgusting way. The market has a whole series of small houses intended for the catering industry; cafes, fast food, butchers, public toilets, etc. etc. The wastewater from all these facilities ends up in Foša.
Foša is located in the immediate vicinity of the market and within the city center of Trogir, which is under UNESCO protection and attracts a large number of tourists every day. For this reason, the visual image of pollution and unpleasant odors that the videos show cause concern among citizens and a negative perception of visitors.
