
The Environmental Protection Inspectorate of the State Inspectorate is conducting an inspection at the shipyard Brodograđevna industrija Split dd, in connection with the planned removal of panels containing asbestos from the ship Moby Drea, which sails under the Italian flag, writes HRT.
During the inspection so far, it has been determined that the dismantling process of the aforementioned panels has not yet begun, but work is currently being carried out on the ship to relocate ship furniture, the State Inspectorate reported in an official statement.
In connection with the planned dismantling of panels containing asbestos, the environmental protection inspectorate warned the legal entity on record that the hazardous asbestos waste that will be generated by this process cannot be disposed of in the Republic of Croatia, in accordance with Article 117 of the Waste Management Act (Official Gazette no. 84/21 and 14/23 – Decision of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Croatia).
The Environmental Protection Inspectorate will also inform the owner of the ship Moby Dre about the above.
"Panels containing asbestos are considered hazardous waste"
Namely, panels containing asbestos, which are planned to be removed by dismantling the Moby Drea ship, are considered hazardous waste subject to a prior notification procedure and obtaining approval from the competent authority for the implementation of Regulation (EC) no. 1013/2006 on waste shipments.
In conclusion, the competent inspections of the State Inspectorate continue with supervisory activities with the aim of preserving public health, protecting the environment and protecting the interests of the Republic of Croatia.
