A Split police officer (60), who was stabbed several times with a pocket knife by a previously arrested man (32) in the Split-Dalmatia Police Department building late Friday night, is recovering well, according to information from the Split Clinical Hospital Center.
"The patient is recovering well, has stable vital functions and can be said to be out of danger. As for the continuation of his treatment, we are optimistic," said the head of the Unified Hospital Emergency Department (OHBP), Dr. Josip Krnić.
He said that after initial treatment at the OHBP, the injured police officer was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Anesthesia Clinic, and that the doctors did everything in their power to provide him with adequate care.
The incident, in which a police officer was seriously injured, occurred on Friday evening after 22 p.m. when a man suspected of extortion and unlawful deprivation of liberty in Makarska was taken to the police station for a criminal investigation. At one point, he asked the police officer to let him use the toilet, and when he was granted permission, he found a pocket knife in another room with which he stabbed him and left him bleeding on the floor.
He then tried to escape, but was prevented from doing so by other police officers who, due to his resistance, had to use force to capture him.
Sanja Nazlić from the Split police said that a criminal investigation is currently underway into the arrested person for assault and serious injury to an official.
