The fire that broke out around noon on Tuesday in the Veliko Brdo area above Makarska was brought under control thanks to the quick response of firefighters and the help of the air force, according to the County Fire Operations Center.
The fire broke out in the immediate vicinity of residential buildings, but the timely intervention of members of the Makarska Public Fire Department prevented its spread.
A total of 90 firefighters with 26 vehicles are participating in the extinguishing, and during the afternoon, two Canadians also provided assistance, but have since withdrawn from the field.
"Although the fire has not yet been officially localized, the situation is under control. Work is currently underway to remediate the area," it was confirmed from the field.
This is a new fire in the Makarska hinterland, which is placing an additional burden on local fire brigades who have been battling a series of fires on the coast in recent days that are suspected to have been arson.
On Tuesday, a fire in the Pisak area that broke out on Saturday morning flared up again, and two fire engines were sent to the scene, but they later left. The burned area is not large, consisting of pine forest and low vegetation.
