EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas warned on Monday that closing the Strait of Hormuz would be extremely dangerous and would not be good for anyone.
"There is great concern about the possibility of retaliation and escalation of war, especially if Iran were to close the Strait of Hormuz, which would be extremely dangerous and not good for anyone," Kallas said before the start of the meeting of foreign ministers, at which the situation in the Middle East will be the main topic.
The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Indian Ocean, is the world's most important oil shipping route, carrying about 20 percent of global oil and gas demand.
The ministers discussed Iran during a working breakfast before the official meeting.
"Ministers are very focused on a diplomatic solution and there is great concern about the possibility of retaliation and escalation of the war," said the high representative.
Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić Radman also expressed concern about the situation in the Middle East and called for de-escalation.
Israel launched attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities on June 13, prompting Iran to retaliate with attacks on Israeli territory. The US intervened in the conflict when it bombed Iranian nuclear facilities two days ago.
The ministers will also discuss a report by the European External Action Service (EEAS) which concluded that there are indications that Israel is in breach of Article 2 of the agreement with the European Union. This article regulates trade relations between Israel and the EU and stipulates that relations between the parties are based on respect for human rights and democratic values.
There is no unity within the EU on what to do about the report. The war between Israel and Iran, in which the United States has become involved, has diverted attention from Israel's behavior in Gaza. It will most likely take note of the report without taking any concrete measures against Israel.
The ministers will also discuss further support for Ukraine.
"Russia continues to bomb Ukraine every day, so we must continue to put pressure on Moscow, and that is why we are seeking to pass the 18th package of sanctions," Kallas said.
Minister Grlić Radman said that each package of sanctions further weakens the Russian war machine. "At the same time, the EU must increase military assistance to Ukraine. Croatia has been on Ukraine's side since day one and will continue to be with it in the future," said Grlić Radman.
