On Tuesday, a meeting was held in Split-Dalmatia County on the initiative to develop a hiking trail from the peak of Sveti Jure to the peak of Sveti Ilija on Biokovo.
County Prefect Blaženko Boban expressed his satisfaction after the meeting, emphasizing that the Split-Dalmatia County is a pioneer in the renovation of hiking trails. "Our task is to start renovation projects for these trails in the coming period. The Sveti Jure and Zagvozda Mountaineering Association was the first to come forward with such activities. We agreed that a conceptual design of the existing trail from Sveti Ilija to Sveti Jure will be made, and that we will see the legal framework that we need for all of this together. The Split-Dalmatia County is financially supporting the implementation of this project as a pioneer in the renovation of trails," said Boban.
The president of the Mountaineering Association "Sveti Jure Zagvozd" Vedran Mlikota points out that it is a hiking trail, which is marked and signposted. "However, it could be arranged a little better for better access and better conditions for hiking. The trail is 7300 meters long, approximately 5500 meters as the crow flies and walking on it takes between 6 and 7 hours," said Mlikota.
The famous Croatian alpinist Stipe Božić points out that this is a trail up the Biokovo ridge, modeled after the Premužić trail. "This trail would actually be laid on old traditional hiking and horse trails that were once roads, just as they are today for cars. This is a new form of tourism, an outdoors offering that would certainly further enrich our county, our region, and it seems to me that the county is giving full support," said Božić.
