The whole of Croatia is buzzing about the increase in the price of HZZO supplementary insurance, but the fact is that most citizens only found out about it from the media. An official letter was not sent to users, and the information only appeared on the HZZO website - a place that few people accidentally stumble upon.
Along with the price increase came another important innovation: the temporary possibility of easier termination of the policy was introduced, without waiting for the contract to expire and without penalty. This extraordinary option is only available until January 31th, so citizens have a very short deadline to decide.
How to cancel a policy?
Until now, HZZO insured persons had three options for terminating their policy: non-renewal upon expiration of the contract, termination with a penalty, and extraordinary termination, which was only possible in special situations.
Due to the increase in premiums, the Croatian Health Insurance Fund (HZZO) has introduced an additional, temporary option – termination of the policy as of January 31, without waiting for the expiration date and without any financial consequences for the insured. This option valid only until the end of January.
To cancel in order to raise the premium, you must complete Form and send the same to
After terminating the policy, policyholders must submit a termination certificate to the new insurer. This document proves that the person previously had an active policy and that the new insurance can begin without a waiting period.
Cancel or release the policy?
Although the new possibility of termination applies to all policyholders, it does not mean that it is equally profitable for everyone. Bojan Radlović, president of the board kompare.hr, points out that the decision to terminate primarily depends on the insured person's access age.
“The Croatian Health Insurance Fund offers a single price for all insured persons – 15 euros per month is paid by both 18-year-olds and 60-year-olds. In contrast, private insurers set prices according to the age of entry. As a rule, the higher the age, the more expensive the insurance policy. Thus, 20-year-olds can take out a policy for as little as 6 euros per month, 30-year-olds for 7 euros, 40-year-olds for 9 euros, etc. Private supplementary insurance is paid to all insured persons under the age of 60. For those older, the Croatian Health Insurance Fund is still the most affordable option.”
