A demanding, multi-hour operation was recently performed at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of the Split Clinical Hospital Center, during which a neck tumor originating from the submandibular salivary gland weighing as much as 3,3 kilograms was successfully removed. Given the unusually large dimensions of the tumor and the pressure on key anatomical structures of the neck, the procedure was extremely challenging.
Despite the complex anatomical, functional, and aesthetic circumstances, the surgery was successful and without complications. The tumor was completely removed, and the defect created by the tumor removal was adequately reconstructed. The patient is recovering well, and all postoperative findings are normal.
The procedure was performed by a team of maxillofacial surgeons consisting of Assist. Dr. Sc. Slaven Lupi-Ferandin,
Ph.D. Ante Mihovilovic i Sanja Kadic, Dr. med.., with the help of the instrumental sisters Ivne Župić, Antonije Čikeš i Lu Domjanovic.
The anesthesia team consisted of anesthesiologists Sunčica Šuškov, Dr. med. i Neven Kuduz, MD and anesthesia technician Mara Vardic, who, by maintaining stable conditions during the operation, enabled the safe performance of the procedure despite compression of the respiratory structures by the tumor.
- This successful procedure confirms the high level of expertise of the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery at KBC Split and its ability to resolve extremely complex clinical cases, while also emphasizing continuous progress in introducing new surgical techniques and performing increasingly complex procedures, thus ensuring top-notch care for maxillofacial patients from all over Dalmatia, which, when it comes to this specialty, gravitates to Split as the central regional reference center, they told us at KBC Split.
