Cemex Croatia presented the results of the project to build solar power plants at three of its locations, co-financed by the EU Modernisation Fund. The construction of photovoltaic systems at the Sv. Juraj plants in Kaštel Sućurac, Sv. Kajo in Solin and the Podsused terminal in Zagreb is worth a total of over 5 million euros, of which 2,9 million euros were co-financed by European funds.
Cemex thus covered the roofs of 28 of its buildings with solar power plants with a total power of 6,377 MW. They will annually produce 8,4 GWh of electricity for the company's needs, which is 6 percent of the total annual energy needs of Cemex Croatia. Also, with this investment, Cemex will reduce the total annual emissions from its operations by 1.337,57 t of CO2.
"By increasing our own renewable energy production capacity, we are reducing the carbon intensity of our production and optimizing the energy mix, which is one of the pillars of our decarbonization strategy. This project is just one in a series of measures aimed at achieving our climate goals and strengthening energy resilience; new projects are underway with which we plan to secure another 17 GWh of renewable energy production for our business needs," he emphasized. Marijan Zekic, Project and Quality Assurance Manager at Cemex Croatia.
The presented project is another step towards achieving the goals of increasing the use of clean energy in Cemex's production. The global goal of Cemex's climate program Future in Action is to become a company with a net zero rate of CO2 emissions by 2050. All activities carried out are aimed at achieving the goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving a level of energy use from low-carbon sources of 65 percent of electricity consumption.
"Starting from the goals of decarbonization, at Cemex we continuously invest in increasing energy efficiency and in new technologies that increase the climate and environmental efficiency of our production. This also supports one of our key business goals, which is the development of low-carbon and ultimately carbon-neutral products, thereby building a comprehensive business model that contributes to the future of construction with lower CO₂ emissions in the entire value chain," said the CEO of Cemex Hrvatska. Alain Voloder.
He emphasized the projects of the Split-Dalmatia County in achieving national and European climate goals Mario Jakic, Director of the Dalmatian Energy Agency, and added: "We want to enable synergy between entrepreneurs, investors and universities to accelerate our energy transition. Entrepreneurial projects like the one we are presenting today are commendable because they take us one step closer to achieving this goal. But in addition, Cemex has also recognized the needs in the community and financed projects to install photovoltaic systems for local schools and clubs, which we particularly welcome."
In a major investment cycle focused on energy efficiency, Cemex Croatia has invested significant funds in the modernization of its facilities in recent years, i.e. in projects that lead it towards achieving the goals of its decarbonization strategy. The last completed energy efficiency and renewable energy project co-financed with European funds was the energy efficiency project at the Sv. Juraj factory, worth approximately EUR 3 million, completed in 2023.
