The State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ) warned on Tuesday of weather instability expected from this evening, forecasting heavy rain and thunderstorms with the risk of flooding and a strong southerly wind.
Heavy rainfall, especially in the Adriatic and areas adjacent to it, with the possibility of flash and urban flooding and thunderstorms, is expected on Wednesday and the first part of Thursday, the DHMZ forecasts, noting that several warnings for dangerous weather phenomena are in effect.
Wednesday and the first part of Thursday will then be very unstable with scattered rain.
More pronounced showers accompanied by thunderstorms may occur as early as Tuesday evening in the northern Adriatic, especially in Istria. Wednesday and the first part of Thursday will then be very unstable with scattered rain, locally and intensely showers accompanied by thunderstorms.
Heavy rainfall is expected, especially on the Adriatic and the areas adjacent to it, locally more than 100 liters per square meter with the possibility of urban and flash floods, first in the northern part, and from Wednesday afternoon in Dalmatia as well.
A strong south wind will blow.
On the Adriatic, especially on Wednesday, strong, sometimes stormy south and southerly winds will blow, and the appearance of leeches is also possible. Wind gusts locally may reach around 100 kilometers per hour.
Heavy showers with thunderstorms are expected in places inland.
Calm weather on Friday
The weather will gradually calm down and clear up by the end of Thursday and on Friday, the DHMZ announced.
The intense weather events that are expected are a consequence of the influx of increasingly humid and unstable air from the Mediterranean.
The DHMZ calls on citizens to be cautious and reminds them that no warning level should be underestimated, and recommends regularly monitoring forecasts and warnings, as well as following the instructions of the competent services.
