The Italian ship Moby Drea, which has asbestos panels on board, entered the Kaštela Bay yesterday and sailed into the Split shipyard. The entire Split area has been on its feet for several days, and today several hundred Split residents and residents of surrounding towns protested in front of the City Administration building, demanding that it be removed from the ship and that it leave the city immediately. The mayor of Kaštela, Denis Ivanović, also spoke out about the whole situation.
- First of all, I think it is completely unacceptable that a ship containing asbestos ended up in Brodosplit at all. I cannot understand how this happened.
Unfortunately, the Kaštela Bay – I can freely say a pool of poison – has already suffered a lot throughout history. We had Jugovinil, which we fought against for years, and numerous other companies have left serious consequences for the health of our citizens and the environment – not only Kaštela, but also neighboring towns, Solin, Split, and even Trogir.
That is why I hereby appeal to all competent institutions, especially the inspectorate and services in charge of environmental protection, to react urgently. While on the one hand we are fighting for the removal of asbestos, it is coming at us again. I expect that the competent services will do their job and that things like this will not happen again - said Mayor Ivanović.
