A man from Kaštela must pay 21.300 euros to two young men he attacked with a knife in front of the Monaco discotheque in Trogir 12 years ago, the Split Municipal Court ruled in a non-final ruling these days.
The attack took place on June 30, 2013, at around three in the morning on Obala kralja Zvonimir. The then 25-year-old from Kaštela was in a disco under the influence of drugs and alcohol when a mass brawl broke out. When the brawl spread, he started beating everyone around him. He also attacked two then 20-year-olds who were not involved in the conflict at all. He bit one of them on the right ear and then punched him in the head. Security guards threw them out of the club, but the violence continued.
Right in front of the disco, he pulled out a knife and first stabbed one young man in the left armpit, then continued to punch and kick him. Then he stabbed another young man in the left chest, causing him a deep, life-threatening wound.
The first injured person spent four days in hospital with a broken jaw and a bitten ear. He was left with a permanent five percent deficit in lung function and a visible deformity of his ear. The second was in life-threatening condition after a knife pierced his chest.
"I thought I was finished while I was driving to Split," he told the court. He spent five days in hospital and was left with a thickened scar.
The defendant confessed to everything during the interrogation.
"I was under the influence of drugs and alcohol, but I remember the incident. I took out a knife and stabbed one in the armpit and the other in the chest when I saw my cousin being beaten," he said, adding that he had no intention of killing anyone. He stressed that the injured young men had nothing to do with the fight that broke out at the club.
The police reported him for two attempted murders and attempted grievous bodily harm, and the Split County Court sentenced him to three years and four months in prison for attempted murder.
The Municipal Court in Split ruled in mid-January this year that the Kaštelan must pay the first injured person 10.800 euros in non-pecuniary damages, the second 10.500 euros, and both must pay the costs of the civil proceedings. Each amount is increased by statutory default interest. The verdict is not yet final.
